Earth woefully unprepared for surprise comet or asteroid, Nasa scientist warns

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/dec/13/space-asteroid-comet-nasa-rocket

This article is about Nasa and their current fear of Asteroids and the earth's imminent danger that it is not prepared for, the article talks about Nasa's fears of asteroids being justified by nearby space bodies that are large enough to cause devastation to the earth, and it also talks about the earth's current technology that could destroy the threat of an asteroid, such as a cannonball to destroy it with kinetic energy, the problem is the construction and funding of these defence systems are not being looked into by the government.

In my opinion this issue is far more important than people are giving the attention for it, an asteroid hit could potentially end all life as we know it and it is a very real threat, yet important science related news like this, including endangered animals, and deathly climate change, is swamped over less meaningful that people apparently care more about than the safety of where they live, its an unusual but also sad truth of media and what it focuses on.

Breitbart declares war on Kellogg's after cereal brand pulls advertising from site

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/nov/30/breitbart-news-kelloggs-advertising-boycott-alt-right

This article is about the the Kelogg's company removing their advertisements from a news site, and the owner's response to Kelogg's boycott of the site. This website is an alt-right news site that recently, after the owner Breitbart becoming a particular member of Donald Trump's political team, has gone under fire due to its extreme and absurd news articles which include but not limited to "Data: Young Muslims in the west are a ticking timebomb" and "Would you rather your child had feminism or cancer" These titles, obviously, create a very bad image for everyone associated with these kinds of articles, which caused Kelogg's boycott of the site and removal of their advertisements. Breitbart has responded by starting a hashtag of #War and criticizes Keloggs for the removal of their advertisements.

In my personal opinion I do not believe that a simple advertisement on a site with a particular view (No matter how backwards, offensive or downright stupid the views are) should reflect the views of the advertisement company. However it makes a lot of sense for Kelogg's to pull their advertisements especially from something as messed up as this alt-right newspaper. Guardian is a left wing news outlet and you can see that they position Breitbart as the antagonist as they look at Kelogg's reasonings for taking down the advertisements rather than whatever is going on through Breitbart's head.

Amy Winehouse

The film titled "Amy" that portrays the important years of of Amy Winehouse's life following her death offers a very specific narrative that positions the audience to think in a specific way. The film is a documentary and is comprised of mostly raw footage taken from many events of Amy Winehouse's life, ranging from both the media exposure of her music, but also personal looks into certain stages of her life, this way the film manages to give the audience two different perspectives, one of what the mass media will see in the form of news coverage and recordings of her concerts, but also accounts of events that happened to her outside of the stage, this allows the audience to see the reality of how Amy is presented on both sides, in the Media and news coverage we see little respect for her being described as a "Mad Person" and additionally little respect for her personal life, when we see elements of her personal life in the form of both interviews from people that knew Amy Winehouse and a few film recordings, it offers a personal look into her life that respects her emotional and personal sate, for example one interview with one of Amy Winehouse's friends showed that during the time Amy Winehouse tried to stay clean, she found everything "boring" without drugs. The people that talk about Amy Winehouse are mostly her friends family, bodyguard, and even Doctor, mostly people that knew her personally and would naturally say some positive things about her, this could be seen as a bias on the film's part as it may have wanted to only show accounts of Amy Winehouse that were positive and sympathetic, as they obviously wanted you to feel sad during the end of the film at the moment of her death, possibly to mimic what her friends and family felt at the end. However this is not completely true as the film as the film also uses a few accounts of other people that may have had different views about Amy, such as her divorced husband Blake.

The film positions Blake as an "antagonist" which is clear when you see that he doesn't get many personal accounts. The main elements that Blake is used for is to show the reason for Winehouse's drug addiction, and even suggests that Blake only stayed with Winehouse because she was successful, the film shows little connection between the then couple for most of the film, which attributes to this, additionally they use a clip from an interview where even he questions why he is married to her, before their divorce.

The documentary about Winehouse's life is able to successfully position its audience in such a way that makes you feel as if you learned something about Winehouse that the typical Media did not tell you about.

Monkey attack in Libya sparks tribal clashes that kill more than a dozen

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/nov/21/monkey-attack-in-libya-sparks-tribal-clashes-that-kill-more-than-a-dozen

This article is about an unusual conflict between two tribes in Libya, these two tribes started a conflict because one tribe let loose a Monkey that attacked two girls, prompting the other tribe to start a conflict by killing three men. This article is an unusual article to be found on the first page of the news when I typed in article in google, mainly because this is not an article coming from the west, a first developed country, nor is it about the recent Japanese tsunami or the presidential election. I think this is because of the bizarre title that this article has been given, that manages to successfully draw in viewers to read the article, it worked on me. I believe that this headline is very powerful because the way they managed to word it is very unusual. I don't think if they could have made the title of the article so attracting, the British based newspaper would not have talked about this event. Because it is about such an obscure part of the world that not a lot of people that read the Guardian would have cared about.

Trump and Obama put differences aside in first White House meeting

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/nov/10/barack-obama-donald-trump-white-house-meeting-transition

This article is about the meeting between Barack Obama and unfortunately President Elect Donald Trump. A lot of Media portrayed this meeting as awkward for both Trump and Obama, as shown by the many shots of their awkward handshake, This article by the Guardian is no exception. Image result for barack obama donald trump handshake

The article also talks about the conflict between two sides of the party, with members of the right reporting having some attacks on racial minorities, and the Left following the routine protests against Donald Trump winning the election, have resulted in violent outbreaks, one such story not reported in this article was about three men beating another man and stealing his car, because he voted Trump. The reasoning for this article not reporting incidents like these may be due to the Guardian being left wing news paper, and wants to put people that are politically left in a more positive light.

In my opinion the meeting between these two meeting made the fact that a celebrity business man who doubles as the world's largest orange is now in charge of the nuclear launch codes and considered one of the most powerful men in the world in the next four years, a very real thing to me that is actually happening. I hate Trump as much as the next sane person. But some of the articles' contents gives me a small amount of hope for the next four years of America. Such as Obama saying he'll be happy to work with Trump because if he succeeds, America will succeed. It's good to know that even in spite of the surprising election, not everybody is at each other's throats. God bless America.

Gogglebox and its audience

Gogglebox is a tv show that has been airing since 2013, it is a reality TV show with the focus on the reactions of people watching television. Gogglebox uses a fairly wide audience as there are different ways that the show tells you that their different characters are from varying classes and ways of life. In the beginning of introducing certain characters at the start of an episode the characters will typically speak over a tracking shot of their house, the type of house can easily tell you their current money situation. Along with other factors such as their clothes. Gogglebox seems to want to represent as many different types of people as possible other than class. Such as gay people, people of different race, and also varying structures of families from single parents to just siblings. Rarely is there a absolutely stereotypical nuclear family.

The types of shows that they have their characters react to for the most part do not elicit any particularly interesting responses. Using shows such as the Great British Bake off creates responses that go as far as overreacting about a "Double hand shake". The only interesting moments of the show I believe the show has are when they present something controversial and actually interesting on television, or just the news. This way they can talk about the topic and give their own opinions, this is more interesting to see because with their diverse cast, it's almost as if they are showing off Britain's opinion on a certain topic or current event. This element was very scarce in the episode that I had watched, and only happened two times concerning two news stories, one of which was about the topic of religion and homosexuality, which has been something the country has talked about for a while. Without these actually interesting topics, I personally do not see a point for this show to exist, as they are reacting at something I'd either prefer to do myself or not care enough to watch.

The intent of including less of these serious topics could be a more malicious reason involving people wanting to actually make fun of the people on goggle box, in particular the people of low class, people of higher class could look at their situations and take a high ground and mock them.

In conclusion Gogglebox has a potential to be a very interesting show but ruins it by focusing on the wrong shows

Brexit: CPS considers complaint that leave campaigns misled voters

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/nov/07/brexit-cps-considers-complaint-that-leave-campaigns-misled-voters

This article is about a letter that has been received that the CPS is considering, this letter complains about the integrity of Brexit and how leave voters were misled and even lied to, some of these lies included the 350 million that went to the EU that didn't exist, and Turkey joining the EU. The article also explains that under a recent law, misleading like this is a corrupt practice. The guardian would obviously agree that the motives behind people voting to leave were incorrect as the Guardian is a left wing newspaper, which would have made it want to stay on the remain campaign.

In my opinion I do agree that the issues with the leave campaign and their flat out lies such as the 350 million should be greatly considered. It is important to realize that the Brexit vote was an advisory vote, and therefore not official. With nothing being signed there is still a way to get it right. In a perfect world the Brexit vote would be done again but this time the campaigning would be based on truths rather than fabricated lies.

Secret Boris Johnson column favoured UK remaining in EU

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/oct/16/secret-boris-johnson-column-favoured-uk-remaining-in-eu

This article is about Boris Johnson's views on how he really wanted Brexit to play out earlier this year. The article makes it clear within the title that Boris Johnson was opposed against the idea of Brexit in the title, this is title is this way to make people interested as people thought that Boris Johnson was a part of the leave campaign. The article goes on to further make connections to brexit towards Boris Johnson leaving his position. The article makes Johnson to appear as a very well rounded individual as while he states he wishes to leave in this unpublished column, he also criticises the EU in it. Because the Guardian is a left wing news paper and thus would have also wanted the UK to remain, they may have wanted to now put Boris in a positive light because its revealed he wanted to remain, and thus make it appear he looks at both sides of the argument.

I personally do not really care for Boris Johnson's Brexit views especially after he dropped out of his position to temporarily run the country, which I thought was a very cowardice thing to do especially since he was part of the reason Brexit happened.

Scary clown' craze prompts UK police warning to fancy dress shops

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/oct/12/killer-clown-craze-prompts-uk-police-warning-to-fancy-dress-shops This article is about the recent and bizarre incident that started in specific American states that spread to other countries in the west like the UK. The clown craze that has people dressing up in Clown costumes and scaring people and even hurting the, this has even caused Police to start telling Dressing up shops to stop selling Clown costumes to the public, with some shops getting a slight increase in clown costume sales. The article also lists some other incredibly unusual incidents such as a man dressing up as batman and delivering vigilante justice to the Clowns causing trouble. Police are taking this as a very serious matter and are persecuting people running around in clown costumes. In my opinion this news story has been incredibly blown out of proportion and its not that much of a crisis that the news and media are making it out to be. My only exposure to these incidents have been both the media and painfully obvious fake videos on social medias like Twitter. The media and news outlets may be so obsessed with making this into a big deal may be to sell papers and make money because any 'crisis' or 'craze' would attract people. This incident may also be connected to dominant ideology as part of that ideology are middle aged people, the clown incident could be connected to young adults causing terror to the older people, as there is a stereotype on younger people from older people being delinquents and rebelious.

Donald Trump groping remarks reveal 'pattern of sexual assault', says Kaine

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/oct/09/donald-trump-groping-remarks-sexual-assault-tim-kaine-debate This article is about the recent scandal involving Donald Trump who was found recorded by a microphone in Hollywood during 2005 about boasting his sexual relations with women. This article is about Donald Trump's public apology about the matter. The article shows ways in which this scandal has negatively effected Trump such as losing the support of multiple republicans, and even having been told to step down now in the position that he's now in. Despite the article title suggesting being against Trump, the content of the article seems to humanise him, one example of this is the first person account from Giuliani, someone from the Trump campaign, saying that his apology was honest and sincere. However being that this is an article by a left wing news outlet, the article is definitely positioning Trump as one people should be against, this is bolstered by the main title of the article, which suggests that Donald Trump's words in 2005 were very harmful. In my opinion I think that this scandal is hardly surprising, and I honestly expected Trump to be someone that'd say these things and respond in the way it is. But these are also words from over six years ago and they shouldn't be used to reflect Trump now, especially when there's more than enough stuff that he's said in the present day that you can hold against him.

Great british bake-off

The great British bake off is an odd TVs series to get such a large viewership despite being not even prime time TV. The success of TGBB could b me coming from the way the show manages to position its audience in a position of power above the contestants, where viewers see bakers struggling to bake properly which allows the viewers to view themselves as being glad they are not in the situation. Audience reception theory may be also related to the success of the great British bake off, this is seen in that who you are rooting for to win may become a topic of conversation between your friends, making it very social. British bake off also might be successful due to the wide Amount of audiences it manages to attract towards it, the contestants and presenters of Mary berry and Mel&Sue allow all the episodes of the bake off to attract middle age to elder people in because they are similar ages to the presenters running the show, but also because some of the contestants are very young, in the beginning of both episode 1 and 2 they clearly stated twice that their youngest baker was just 19 years old, this may be to attract the one audience it won't get right away with the presenters. The show also has a few minorities, but they are vastly out of proportion compared to the amount of white people, this may be important if another country uses this show as a representation of what Britain is like, as the show likes to flaunt a lot that it's a British baking show, with flags, references to things in Britain like the page 3 of the sun, and even the history of British biscuits and dunking them in tea, it could be seen as a problem that a proudly British show has mostly white members despite Britain being a multicultural society. In conclusion the success of TGBB is a mix of its strong representation to get lots of audiences, and some audience theory

Pepe the frog artist supports Hillary Clinton

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/sep/14/pepe-the-frog-artist-supports-hillary-clinton This article is about an event during last week where President candidate Hillary Clinton made a claim about a character from an old webcomic series, a character named Pepe the Frog, was a representation of the white supremacist neo-nazi side of the Right wing supporters. This unusual claim has had many backlash and confusion as the comic and character have nothing to do with any political ideology and mostly contain silly jokes. This article talks about how the creator of the comic, Matt Furie is not only not a white supremacist neo nazi but also a supporter of Hillary Clinton, in this article he his interviewed and the transcript mentions how he finds the situation funny and nothing more, because its a "Damn Cartoon Frog". This article also talks about how despite this, Furie is still a Hillary Clinton supporter. This article caught my interest as before seeing this article I initially thought that the comic creator would not feel very happy that such an important figure would call their creation a supporter of a racist ideology, but this article shows that he not only takes it very well and it doesn't phase him, but it also shows that he straight up supports Hillary Clinton. Furie also says in this article that the comic that Pepe is in is "very diverse" as he lists of the variety of characters in his comic. This article was done by the Guardian, a left wing news outlet, as such it makes sense to put light in the situation and humanize Matt Furie who was wrongly accused of being related to facism, and is made to show that he is left wing, which is definitely a positive thing in a left wing newspaper.

Brexit is a rejection of globalisation (How to save the world)

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/jun/26/brexit-is-the-rejection-of-globalisation This article by the Guardian is about Brexit, this long article talks about the cause and what effect Brexit will have in the future. One aspect of this article that I was particularly interested in were the parts where it noted the failures of the EU, they talk about since its creation that the promises that the EU had made have not been met, giving examples of Italy's economy not improving since the EU began, it also talks about the economically unstable and poorer parts of the UK having the most 'leave' vote, which implies the low standard of living and lack of improvements that people see have caused people to choose this vote, in particular this interesting because the Guardian being a left wing newspaper, it'd be against the idea of leaving, and while the title of the article suggests this, this is not the case with the content involving why the leave vote won, suggesting that the leave vote was justified. In the beginning of the article they talk about the idea of globalization, and how it started back when the Berlin wall was torn down, I believe that this idea of globalization that the articles goes on about is the best way that the world can be saved, the world as one close unit is stronger than the world as separated countries who fight between each other with their own interests in mind, while the idea of the world acting as one single unit it almost impossible in its current state, I believe it should be an end goal every country should try and meet, obviously, Brexit goes against this motion, which is why it can be seen as a problem. The Berlin wall is also a symbol of this unification of the world, as it represented the far sides of Europe, other examples of the world being unified can be seen throughout history, through allied systems, the league of nations, the UN, and the EU, Brexit is a step back from this idea.

Fourl lions representation

Four lions is a film that was released on Film 4 in 2010. The film’s story follows a group of Muslim terrorists who wish to be suicide bombers. This film focuses on the touchy issue of Terrorism and how it often is drawn towards Muslim religion, and turns to make it into a comedy. The film’s representations of Muslims could be seen as a negative representation of them however, this is not the case when not looking at first glance. One important aspect of the film is that it is a comedy film, the four main characters whilst are terrorists, they are not the only Muslim characters, one character which is the brother of the main character Omar, is a Muslim but not a terrorist, this minor character contrasts the exaggerated and absurd main characters who are stereotypes, the stereotyped characters are where all the comedic aspects of the film comes from, and the film is likely made to laugh at the idea of the stereotypes themselves rather than just laugh at Muslims themselves because they think this is how Muslims all are. Despite the absurd stereotyped characters that the film focuses on, these main characters are also somewhat subverted from the stereotype, the main character Omar is portrayed as a critical thinking sympathetic character, despite the fact that they are terrorists and we should not be sympathizing with terrorists, this is because of the unique view that the film looks at terrorists, the stance the film looks at terrorists is similar to typical comedy films with a group of four, yet the comedy comes from the fact that they are terrorists. Because of the mocking of stereotypes and not offending Muslims with the use of characters, Four lions is very unique as it manages to make a comedy out of a topic that would usually cause offense.

Misconceptions of representation

In the Media, there are often a lot of representations you can find in the Media, these representations are often driven by one specific characteristic for different types of people known as Stereotypes, these Stereotypes are found in most Mainstream media, and often sway the views of the viewers on the world, these streamlined forms of representations cause incorrect interpretations of how things and people should be, one of the most common examples of this misguided views that stereotypes can cause is seen in how Women are represented in the Media, because of the dominant ideology that can often be seen in the Media, the dominant ideology being white straight males, you often see in particular magazines that women are sexualized, this is because of the dominant ideology in particular likes seeing women like this, this causes the viewers and readers of a magazine to see and believe that this is how women should be, this is both for males and females, females would believe that they should dress and act in a specific way that makes them fit in a specific way that is seen in magazines, and it would make males have this expectation of women in real life be the same in the Media, however this is expectation that is created from the stereotypical representation is obviously not truly representative to real life, in fact often women seen in magazines are often edited in Photoshop to remove any qualities seen in Women that may not be considered desirable, and thus giving an inaccurate idea that this is how all women should look. A similar depiction of how people are misrepresented can be seen in action films, in action films, we often see desirable and exciting aspects of people like Police officers and people that work for the government, this would create a desirable view of how people like that are and what lives they lead, and that they must be always more exciting, however this is an inaccurate representation of what having such jobs is like in real life, one film that shows a more accurate form of representation of a Police officer is the satire film Hot fuzz, where paper work is given a much needed focus in the film about that type of work In conclusion representations can be very dangerous as it leads to people to be wrong about what the world is like, while this is less important in fictional forms of media such films and fantasy focused media, as long as it is made clear that it is fictional, however this is a problem for magazines and news outlets, which have a goal of being more close to real life, and are thus dangerous as people can learn things from them without realizing these are the views of one person on the world.

David Cameron is blackmailing Europe, Vladimir Putin claims

www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/17/vladimir-putin-accuses-david-cameron-blackmailing-europe-by-calling-referendum This article by the guardian is about the politician of Russia Vladimir Putin suggesting David Cameron initiated the vote to leave Europe named "Brexit" as a way to threaten the rest of Europe by weakening Europe. This response of Putin was likely made because David Cameron is now against leaving Europe. This article was made by the Guardian which is a UK based news outlet, this news may be covered by them to show UK viewers the opinions of the UK from outside sources of Europe, which makes it relevant to the UK, The Guardian responding to this statement made by Putin may be an attempt by the Guardian, a left wing news outlet, to shed some negativity on leaving Europe, as it suggests the intent to leave Europe came from a reason that does not concern the benefits of leaving Europe, In my opinion I do think that Brexit started as a way to Blackmail Europe, as the threat could bring some benefits to stay in Europe to give the incentive to let them stay.

Media advertisement analysis (unfinished)

1: Visual/genre/Narrative codes for Virgin Atlantic's let it fly advertisement: This advertisement starts off with the main character who constantly appears throughout the advertisement writing down something simple, you do not see this person's face at any point within the advertisement, and the Narrator constantly refers to his actions as 'yours' this is to make this faceless, speechless character, with an unnamed idea to be a fit in replacement for the viewer, the advertisement is trying to inspire you to do something with an 'idea' which is something everyone must have. We see a spark after the character has finished writing,a spark flares, this perhaps connotes the character's ideas as their small piece of paper transforms into a large, smart book with the words "Game changing business plan" this is to perhaps tell you of the worth of your idea, as the stand in character. We then see imagery of the Statue of Lincoln, for an American this has a lot of connotations, as he was a president that made a lot of changes in the world such as abolishing Slavery, the advertisement is likely to be trying to give inspiration for such an important American President like Lincoln. We then see the curtains open onto the inside of a small plane, that clearly does not look official and is not a proper space for travel, the Narrator then dismisses it and the curtains open to the Virgin plane, in the interior of this plane we see many aspects that connote wealth and luxury such as people opening up your car, high class looking drinks, and the large, pristine room that is shown, all this is meant to associate with Virgin atlantic, as you primarily see the colour of red, the colour Virgin atlantic uses. We see imagery of boxing matches, such as the bell sitting outside of a boxing ring being rang the moment before the interview shots are shown, comparing telling your idea to other people to a fight is probably reflective of how people feel about doing it, in that they find it very difficulty, the advertisement also plays on this fear of telling your idea as they show tigers at a table until they are replaced with people at a table, the advertisement continues the idea of inspiration and ups the importance of your idea by replacing the interview with a speech in front of what appears to be different country representatives, this is to tell the viewer the worth of their idea, as it shows it was able to impress the audience in just four minutes. The advertisement associates succeeding with the pitch with hitting a ball with a bat, something most people get happy once succeeding. At the end of the advertisement we see the same shot of the person writing the idea on the piece of paper, to tell you where all the positive outcomes the advertisement showed came from. The narrator was a the main guide of the advertisement, and told you exactly what was happening throughout the advertisement, this was perhaps done to make you feel like this is exactly what will happen to make this 'idea' be told. 2: Visual/Genre/Narrative codes for

Oxfam says UK's top 1% took quarter of all new wealth over past 15 years

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/mar/14/oxfam-uk-1-percent-quarter-new-wealth-15-years This article is about reporting how 1% of people in the UK, which is about 600,000, has taken up a quarter of the wealth for 15 years. Which has resulted in about 3.7 million each over 15 years. The article uses many quotes from people who are a part of Oxfam and understand the situation, such as the chief executive, who show a very clear opinion that this is not a good situation, this shows clearly how the Guardian feels, this aligns with their left wing view, where they are going to be more inclusive and think about everyone, they also put emphasis on the low 10% too, showing how much lower their standards of money are, its clear they want you to sympathize with them, such as saying things like "More people than ever are relying on food banks" The title of the article makes it clear to a reader why they should read it, saying the source of this information along with the shocking statistic. In my opinion I think the statistics they show prove how bad of a situation this is, and something should be done about it.

Regional identity representation

There are many different ways the representation of regional identity can be shown. Regional identity is the way people are connected to where they are from, this can range from many things from different foods, to dialect, and even down to basic locations you'll see in the associated region. In Made In Chelsea we see many ways that the region is represented, one thing the vast majority of characters have a distinct accent that accompanies them, this allows people who are not in Chelsea to be able to see that it is a different part of the UK. There are many connotations towards wealth and a rich life style as well, from the foods and the areas they state they buy clothes in the first few minutes of the opening. An important aspect to note about the way Made in Chelsea represents their region is that they feel very enclosed, they characters distinctly make note that its their rich lifestyle. This is important to note because it contrasts with the Only way is Essex's much more different approach, Essex in the Only Way is Essex is represented as an equally rich and wealthy lifestyle, with the houses they live in and the foods and drinks they have, The Only Way is Essex acts more inviting to this lifestyle. This could potentially make it a more positive representation of Region than MIC. MIC only seems to show itself as very exclusive lifestyle, and that the rich life style they have is the only one that exists in Chelsea, this would not represent the full class range in Chelsea, as it is much broader than just having people of upper class. TOWIE manages to not do this by making itself more inviting to its audience, who are not all going to be of the same class. This allows itself to show itself as not just being this rich lifestyle that is shown in the show. Both of these shows however suffer from poor race representation, as most of the characters are white, and there appear to be few minority characters, this ties in with race, but it poorly represents the population found in both respective represented regions.

Woman found dead in elevator 30 days after power cut off by building workers

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/06/woman-found-dead-in-elevator-30-days-after-power-cut-off-by-building-workers This article is about the quiet death of a 43 year old woman who was trapped inside an Elevator for 31 days. The elevator was cut off from power after Maintenance workers were told to check for a glitch. The Chinese government identified this as a Manslaughter and fault of the workers, the Woman was deduced to not die from malicious intent, but was filed as Manslaughter. There is relevance in this article because of China's previous history of poor workplace safety. The article lists another incident last year where a woman was swallowed by a Mall escalator. This article while not at all being relevant to the Guardian's British focus and political views, was most likely created for because of the shock value this article gives, people are more inclined to read it. The article clearly states the affair in its title, making people more likely to read it. Because of the Guardian's outsider stance, there is little clear bias to be seen within the article.

Forms of representation in Untouchable

Untouchable is a French film created in 2011. The film's story focuses around a low class man named Driss who finds himself working as a caretaker for a paralyzed rich Aristocrat named Philippe, which allows them to bond a strong friendship with each other despite coming from exact opposites of life. Because of the many themes this film touches on, there are a lot of aspects of society and types of people that are seen represented. One of the most noticeable aspects that the film represents is the look into of class. Driss comes from a very low class background, moments before he is hired he was without a home, and he had very little even before then, as we see the home containing his family is very small, and run down, such as their bath not working properly when the faucet runs, when he is hired and gets his home commodities, we see a contrast scene to the scene where his bath stops working, where we see him in a much more expensive, larger and more high quality bath. There is a somewhat positive look on the representation of class. As despite Driss' background, they hire him anyway, they even portray a difference in class realistically in that there are some characters that come up to Philippe and suggest how Driss is not the kind of person that should be taking care of Phillipe. Another form of representation that actually connects greatly to the representation of class is the representation of race. An obvious fact you can see in the film is that all of the characters who are upper are not black, and the vast majority are white, and likewise, all of the lower class characters, and characters who are flat out homeless are either black or a minority. Driss himself is a character that actually has a lot of negative stereotypes that relate to his race, such as him and his family living in the hood, he regularly steals things (Seen when he first goes to job application) and he also acts very aggressive and impulsive. The film uses these stereotypes of black people against itself however, as despite all these qualities, we see him accept the job and gladly be accepted by his co workers, like they would with any other person. So despite the predominantly white, upper class work space that Driss is working in, he is still treated as an equal, and the people Driss works with actually ends up improving some aspects of their life, such as Driss' adamant nature encourages Philippe to meet the woman he spoke to but never met before, and also encourages him to stand up against his daughter. There might be a subtext message here saying that the two vastly different walks of life interacting and meeting with each other allows them to improve each other and become better people. This is also true for Driss' case, there is a contrasting scene at the beginning and the end of the film where we see Driss ask two different people to park the car out of the drive way, in the first scene we see him aggressively pick up the person out of his car and pushes him against the wall to threaten him, but in the second scene which is near the very end of the film, we see him politely ask the person to drive out of the way. Representation of the disabled is also a very major part of the film. The film appears to have very positive representation of the disabled. The disabled man Philippe is a very normal acting character despite his complete paralysis of the body, we see that there are of course limitations to Philippe due to his circumstances, as he constantly needs someone to take care of him. However he is not completely dependant on his caretakers all the time. The film also gives a very positive representation on the disabled in the ending of the film, where we see that Philippe gets to finally meet the woman she likes, this sends a message to viewers that disabled people are not limited by their disability to make relationships. The same sort of idea comes from the friendship Driss and Philippe create, Philippe's disability has very little to do with why their friendship forms, and that shows how much of a normal person Philippe is despite his disability.

EU's ban on inefficient toasters delayed to avoid pro-Brexit press attack

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/feb/28/eu-inefficient-toasters-ban-delayed-avoid-pro-brexit-press-attack This article is about the EU's Regulation on inefficient products such as Toasters. Officials and staff were asked to delay this ban on the equipment without any direct reason why, however an official note stated that this was linked to The British referendum. More specifically the negative press that they would get from this from supporters of the referendum. The delay did not completely stop this, such as Tweets from David Coburn. This article is relevant for the Guardian to post because it is a British Newspaper, making anything to do with the soon to be referendum important. As Readers would be interested. This article caught me interested due to the bizarre title, which due to its literal statement, made me want to know what it really meant. The guardian is a left wing news paper, this is relevant due to most left wing political parties agree against the referendum, this is related to their words on the actions of pro-referendum parties, such as calling it "negative" press, making it seem like they are giving very antagonizing responses.

National and regional identity and representation.

National identity is one's connection with their own country, and this identity to their country can be shrown through many ways such as the accent they have, and the potential culture that comes from that nation that they bring with them, the way a nation can be represented can also be used to fuel stereotypes, we get stereotypes of whole nations such as the French being cowards and the Americans being all obese. The Media can represent this sort of identification with countries in many possitive or negative ways. The first episode of Mind your language (1977) is a very good example of poor national representation. In mind your language you see an English teacher teaching their language to a people from a variety of different Nations and cultures. Mind your language plays on many of the stereotypes that can come with the represented nationallities, such as an elder Japanese man who is the head of an electronics company, and two Asian men who argue about their opposing religion, which the show suggests they could start a race war about. We see also that in this episode a joke constantly used is the lack of the foreign speaker's knowledge of English, which is another representation of every other foreign nation, that they don't know anything about english or they could be just stupid. Another example of National identity is commonly found in sports, in the 2009 Rugby World cup Sevens we see a lot of iconography in the first opening sequence, these iconographies are mainly flags that are distinct and associated with specific countries, we are familiar with these common types of representation, but it also shows more abstract things, that we are still familiar with representing specific coutries, such as a lion represents wales. Regional identity is very similar to the idea of national identity in that it is about how people are connected to where they live, but it is more focused on the different regions of a single country, and their closed culture within their own country. Such as In Barcelona using a variation of the spanish language called Catalan. We can see regional representations in specific regions in two examples, one of these examples is the only way is essex, this has somewhat poor representation of the people within the eastern region. As the characters represented are somewhat stupid and do not show a lot of intelligence, the show often shows a lot of negative traits of people such as a lot of the characters being materialistic. Another example of regional representation in the media is Geordie shore, Geordie shore represents people within the Tyneside area of the UK. Like TOWIE Geordie shore has poor representations of the region, and focuses on a stereotype that people of Newcastle are party obsessed and materialisitc.

Media report (old)

The media coursework prepared was created for a Thriller film intended for a Teenage audience, Thriller films and things in the genre in general tend to have very specific themes that revolve around them, the Thriller theme is typically very similar to the horror genre, but is still very unique. Typically the Thriller genre is in a much more down to earth setting than horror films, and has a very realistic situation and more believable circumstances that could happen in the real world, but are unlikely to occur. A theme most thriller films contain is the theme of mystery and the unknown world, in particular Thriller films look at the fear that this mystery brings. As such most Thriller films are about uncovering a mystery; this is why a lot of Thriller films are also ‘crime’ or ‘mystery’ genre too. Such as Gone girl and the girl with the dragon tattoo. To achieve the Teenage audience, the film has to have the main cast of characters be an age group that Teenagers can relate to, ranging from 16-20. Because this is a film, the coursework assets that would go with the Media product would have to be fit for a film, the assets that were chosen to fit with a Film were a Theatrical poster, a DVD cover, and a script. The idea of the Thriller film created to fit the conventions of the Thriller genre is called Black town, it was decided to be about a Teenage boy named Joe who wakes up in a mysterious house, who contains a killer inside who pretends to be his friend, his only connection to his past is another person on the other side of a phone who knows him, and tries to get him out of this mysterious town that is almost empty aside from a few more killers, and tries to discover why he is here. This film concept attempts to reach that theme of mystery and fear of the unknown by including a mystery to discover itself, but makes it seem dangerous and disturbed by including the danger of killers in this setting. ImageImageImageImageTo get information about Theatrical posters, more than fifteen different theatrical posters with a Thriller genre theme were looked at to get inspiration for the poster. For every poster, there are many typical conventions of a poster that were found that needed to be included in the Theatrical poster, One of the main things I noticed in each poster was that the title was very large and was in a noticeable or interesting font, the title had to obviously be big to catch the viewer’s eye and stick in their mind, but usually the title connoted the sort of genre the poster was for. For example Shutter Island has a Thriller poster with red text with black shadows covering some areas of it, While the red can connote murder and blood, that aspect of it makes it somewhat creepy and disturbing, while the black found on it can easily connote mystery, as the title is not completely covered, so is the film also shrouded in mystery, the font also is unifying and a bit creepy to look at. This tells me that the title is an important way to tell a viewer what kind of film this is. In Shutter Island’s poster again, we see that the actor name is a very large contrast to the Title in both font and colour, this tells me how the actor names should stand out, and also be the second or third largest font sizes on the poster. Something else seen in theatrical posters were the use of tag lines, Donnie Darko’s poster has a tagline too, the majority of the taglines found on each poster told you something about the film’s story. There are many typical things that every theatrical poster has. In particular the vast majority of film posters have a credit block that goes underneath the title at the bottom of the poster, what is important about the placement of the credit block is that it does not block anything important in the poster, and is out of the way of the main focus of the poster. Along with the credit block, logos such as universal included, these two would go to the bottom of the poster usually, and would be small and out of focus. Colours were also an important aspect of each Thriller, as colours can connote many things. Light blues were in particular a very common sight in Thriller posters, as seen in Donnie Darko, the blue colours are able to connote isolation, loneliness, and even death, all the things that blues can connote are important aspects for the themes that you find in Thriller genre, as fear is an important component, the things blue can connote can also invoke fear. Greys and whites was also a colour used for similar reasons, as you can see in Gone girl. Grey manages to connote a more serious tone for your film, as Thrillers would never be able to achieve a light hearted feeling, Grey and white colours manage to tell you the seriousness of the film. One final aspect of theatrical posters is the constant appearance of the main character or characters in the poster, as they are important, you see them in the foreground of your poster, and usually the exact main point of attention. In Donnie Darko’s poster, you see that the one light source comes from the centre of the main character, drawing your attention to him. This is the theatrical poster created for Black town, it attempts to use all the listed conventions of the theatrical poster listed above, I believe the areas I have succeeded on recreating are the colours used in the poster, the background of the town and trees was intentionally made to be incredibly dark with only suggestions of light sources in the back, this was to connote that theme of mystery, this dark setting also allowed me to easily blend into the parts of the poster that were not of focus, the credit block and the logos. At the top I focused on the use of colours, a greyish blue was used for the sky to have both of those colour’s connotations, but I also used a red around the area the phone lights up, this is important as it relates to the context of the Film’s narrative, where throughout the film, the phone and the person on the other end leads to the discovery of the main character’s past. The inclusion of the main character was intentionally made to be in a dark light to again fit with the Film’s story of him not knowing his memory, so he’s in darkness, however in doing this I missed one of the main points of showing the protagonist, in that I didn’t make him an as important aspect of the poster as he could have been, so the lighting should have been slightly altered, the actor names while may be too small, I believe fit the style of how other posters showcase their actors. Another thing I may have changed about this poster however it the amount of negative space I used, as the credit block and the logos have taken up maybe a bit much room, so I may have decreased their size, and moved the title and tagline downwards. The title and tagline were also successful I believe, as the font was strange enough to fit the genre, and also hit a certain theme they both shared. The colours too also were made to fit the black and grey motif, with red added in to highlight a keyword that is important to the film “Alone” ImageA DVD cover was also produced to go with the Poster. This means that many of the pre mentioned conventions of a theatrical poster such as the title, actor names, colour, main character, and credit block/logo can also be applied to the DVD cover, but there are some additions to a DVD cover. More commonly DVD covers have reviews of the film itself because they come out later, so that had to be included, but it’s important to note that the review text had to still fit with the look of the poster’s text. We see Age ratings on every DVD colour on either the front side or back, or usually all of them. Logos are also now seen on multiple sides of the cover. On the front as well we will see a typical DVD logo, this can also appear on other sides of the cover. On the back of the DV, key images of the film are seen to let the viewer know what they are getting into. There is also a small blurb about the film’s story that tells you what the film is about. Finally there are various setting options seen on the poster itself about the DVD such as sound settings and languages.

Woman sues London pub for £4.2m after tripping in beer garden

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/feb/22/woman-sues-westbourne-pub-beer-garden-rope-stumble This article is about a woman who tripped within the area of a pub. The injury she sustained made her unable to stay at work for some months, and the injury had long lasted effects. Although the pub admitted fault of the injury and paid Over 150,000. The woman was not satisfied and wanted 4.2 million from them, she believes that the injury has caused her major mood swings which caused her to give up her job three years later, and it gave her scars that she felt uncomfortable with as she believed people would think she self harmed. The court denied her request for this 4.2 million pay in reparations. I think this news story is somewhat silly, and the woman is asking too much for the bar to be responsible for that wasn't really their fault directly, she appears to exaggerate her own injuries in her own quotes, saying she has permanent unsightly scars, but the court had came to an agreement that her injuries were not nearly as bad, certainly not for 4.2 million. The Guardian's left wing view would not have influenced the reasoning of why they would publish this article, but it is relevant as it is a UK news paper, so they would account UK events.

"The truth about London's air pollution"

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/feb/05/the-truth-about-londons-air-pollution This article from the guardian is about the dangers of air pollution and the problems it causes. The title itself was chosen to draw in a particular audience that would be concerned with and be aware of the dangers of air pollution, and thus would wanna know more about it. One of the first points it brings up about the pollution is how they have an effect on children in particular, children are usually used as a backdoor to get to a wide range of people, as the vast majority of people feel safety and concern for children more than anyone else, so it draws in another audience, it also brings in audiences that would usually not be opposed to these sorts of views, this is because the Guardian is a left wing newspaper and focuses on the inclusiveness and protection of all people, this would counter act against the views of a right wing newspaper, which is all about production and business, as air pollution are a cause of businesses and are connected to methods people do to make money, this sort of issue is a lot less likely to be covered by a right wing newspaper because of its connotations that go against their view. This news article caught my attention because things like air pollution and global warming are liked to be ignored or pushed under the rug despite that they are undisputed fact, so I was interested to see that the issue of Air pollution would be brought up right now of all times when not much has changed about air pollution other than its still progressively worse and no one bats an eyelid at it. What further interested me by this article was the connotations they added in the first few paragraphs of how air pollution can be potentially killing and cause major damage to everyone.

Electoral register loses estimated 800,000 people

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jan/31/electoral-register-loses-estimated-800000-people-since-changes-to-system This article is about the dramatic drop in number of people on the voting register after the government made changes to the voting register, the article manages to draw you into the article by stating the issue at hand immediately, this issue is relevant as election rates has always been a problem, as it is always low, so the fact that it decreased even further is a problem. One of the main problems that people recognized was that there was a significant drop in student voters, which has always been a topical issue brought up about elections that younger people vote a lot less, this makes the issue relevant to people ages 20-25 who can vote. Another problem that the article presents because of the decrease in votes is that the remaining people who would vote are groups of like minded people, creating a significant bias that weigh in better for one party. This whole issue is specifically relevant to a newspaper outlet like the guardian, which is UK based, making it relevant to the UK readers who will buy this, but it is also significant to its left side views in terms of politics, as it brings up that the labour party believe that most of the estimated voters are people who would support them. The article does say however the reasons behind the change of the voting registration system was to avoid fraud and error, which was an issue brought up by people In my opinion I think that the change's motives were necessary and important, as votes must be secure and certain due to their importance, and the drop of people could not be foreseen, however I think that they should do something to bring that number back up somehow by making election registration more accessible and easier.

Asylum seekers made to wear coloured wristbands in Cardiff

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/jan/24/asylum-seekers-made-to-wear-coloured-wristbands-cardiff This article is about the red colourbands that refugees are now having to wear in Cardiff, these bands have been introduced ever since there were complaints about people targeting the homes they were accommodated after realizing they were all coloured red, these bands are also the only way the Refugees are able to get free meals, if they take the bands off they will lose that privilege, the article mentions quotes from people who are wearing the wristbands, and claim that some people who see the bands, will shout insensitive remarks at them. The refugees cannot put the wristbands back on once they have taken them off. Another quote from a refugee says how they do not negotiate the wristbands, and complaints are ignored. There is also a quote from a human rights activists, saying this is "Blatant discrimination" The article is relative to the newspaper because the guardian is a UK newspaper, so Cardiff is relevant, this story also makes sense to be reported by a left wing newspaper like the guardian because their beliefs align with concerning how people are being treated and are they being treated correctly. I was drawn to this article by the fact that refugees are a very relevant topic recently, and I wanted to know more about how they were being treated, the title alone was already interesting and I wanted to understand why Refugees would have to wear bands in particular. In my opinion though I feel that the intent of these bands is simply to identify who and who aren't refugees so they can distribute food to only refugees, I understand why people would see a problem with this as it does suggest a form of separation of residents and refugees, and might give a message of how they are 'different' but in my opinion, the bands are fine as long as they don't get any worse from this.

Snow and frost expected as Britain prepares for big chill

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/jan/10/weather-snow-frost-expected-britain-big-chill This article is about the predicated snow fall and extreme cold weather to come to Britain in particular. The article is relevant because the Guardian, the news outlet that wrote this, are a British news outlet and would of course find this relevant, its also important to note that the reason this article is a whole article and not just a normal weather report is because of the nature of the UK's weather making snow and extreme colds a rarity, and it is very relevant to people to know what is going to happen so they can be prepared for the more drastic conditions faced, as it can result in many problems for people. The title's article is rather drawing with the first word being "snow" which is sure to attract people as the first thing people will assume is that it is talking about the weather changing to those conditions, I though this article was a good one to choose because it isn't particularly interesting but it is very important for every person in the UK to know about, its also an article that has absolutely nothing to do with politics or social issues which is a nice change to have rather than the other articles you see.
