Misconceptions of representation
In the Media, there are often a lot of representations you can find in the Media, these representations are often driven by one specific characteristic for different types of people known as Stereotypes, these Stereotypes are found in most Mainstream media, and often sway the views of the viewers on the world, these streamlined forms of representations cause incorrect interpretations of how things and people should be, one of the most common examples of this misguided views that stereotypes can cause is seen in how Women are represented in the Media, because of the dominant ideology that can often be seen in the Media, the dominant ideology being white straight males, you often see in particular magazines that women are sexualized, this is because of the dominant ideology in particular likes seeing women like this, this causes the viewers and readers of a magazine to see and believe that this is how women should be, this is both for males and females, females would believe that they should dress and act in a specific way that makes them fit in a specific way that is seen in magazines, and it would make males have this expectation of women in real life be the same in the Media, however this is expectation that is created from the stereotypical representation is obviously not truly representative to real life, in fact often women seen in magazines are often edited in Photoshop to remove any qualities seen in Women that may not be considered desirable, and thus giving an inaccurate idea that this is how all women should look.
A similar depiction of how people are misrepresented can be seen in action films, in action films, we often see desirable and exciting aspects of people like Police officers and people that work for the government, this would create a desirable view of how people like that are and what lives they lead, and that they must be always more exciting, however this is an inaccurate representation of what having such jobs is like in real life, one film that shows a more accurate form of representation of a Police officer is the satire film Hot fuzz, where paper work is given a much needed focus in the film about that type of work
In conclusion representations can be very dangerous as it leads to people to be wrong about what the world is like, while this is less important in fictional forms of media such films and fantasy focused media, as long as it is made clear that it is fictional, however this is a problem for magazines and news outlets, which have a goal of being more close to real life, and are thus dangerous as people can learn things from them without realizing these are the views of one person on the world.
